Comments deadline Oct. 14: Shoreline Inventory and Characterization report released

San Juan County has more than  466 miles of marine and freshwater  shorelines including bays, spits, small estuaries, bluffs, stream and tidal deltas, and rocky outcrops. A 314-page draft shoreline inventory and characterization report, along with 72 maps, are posted on the county's website . The report sets the baseline for the ecological functions and values of the shoreline the county will have to protect in the future.

The report, part of the Shoreline Management Program update process, provides information on the county’s ecosystems, specific discussions on individual shoreline management areas, including marine and lake shoreline, a use analysis identifying existing uses and potential future uses, recommendations for shoreline management, and data gaps that would be helpful to close for future planning.

The draft report was given to the county in May. It was the end of July when the county council appointed a technical advisory committee whose job it is to review it. Comments were received from some members of the advisory committee and then the report was released to the public.

Electronic copies of the report are available on CD. Email colinm@sanjuanco.com for a copy. Local libraries will be receiving hard copies of the report soon with the maps on discs.

The County would appreciate citizens' comments. Please submit written corrections, criticism, comments, suggestions and any thoughts by the end of Friday, October 14, 2011. Your submissions will be logged and addressed in the second draft of the Inventory, Analysis and Characterization report.
