Rash of vandalism on Lopez Island

There has been an uptick in vandalism calls on Lopez Island, many of which have taken place in the Village. This increase culminated in a village wide vandalism that occurred on the evening of  October 17, 2023.

The Lopez Village Park bathrooms, the bathroom near The Lopez Bookstore, the Fertile Grounds Community Garden, and Lopez Island Community Church all sustained various amounts of damage.

Damage included broken locks, eggs thrown against walls, crowbar damage to a structure, litter left behind, and other general property damage. Several Lopez organizations have already installed security cameras, and more are considering it.

No one has been excluded as a suspect, but the circumstances do seem to indicate that juveniles may have been involved.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is committed to increased patrol in the Village area and would also like to encourage the community to keep a watch over the Village as well.

If there appears to be any suspicious behavior afoot, especially at night, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 for emergencies, or our non-emergency number: 360-378-4151.

Parents, we would like to encourage you to keep tabs on your teenagers’ locations, especially while unsupervised after dark.

The Sheriff's Office also recommends businesses utilize security cameras to protect their investments and possibly capture video evidence of crimes being committed.
