Islanders solve international crime

On vacation and waiting in line for a restaurant, Doug McCutcheon of San Juan Island spotted a sign asking people to keep an eye out for a stolen sailboat.  A couple of days later in Ganges Harbour,  Salt Springs Island, B.C. he spotted the sailboat, now spray-painted red and renamed "Dirty Bird". He contacted the authorities and they returned the damaged boat to the father of the owner. He happened to be on Salt Spring Island. The boat had been stolen a month earlier in Oak Harbor, Washington.

He said, "We made the front page of the Salt Spring paper." Since he and Kari didn't stick around after the authorities arrived, they appeared in the paper as "anonymous".
