DNR helicopter helps fight Orcas Island wildland fire

A wildland fire was successfully fought on difficult and steep terrain on the west side of Orcas Island in the area of Saw Mill Road and south of Lime Quarry Road Monday afternoon. DNR helicopters assisted Orcas Island Fire and Rescue by providing bucket drops of water.

By 4 p.m. the fire was knocked down. Mutual aid from Lopez and San Juan Island Fire Departments were expected to arrive soon to rotate crew.

The first report of the fire on OIF&R Facebook page was posted at 2:30 p.m. The DNR helicopter arrived at 3 pm. OIF&R firefighters contained the foot of the fire and were working on the flanks.

August 9: Music on the Lawn - "The Tropics" in Friday Harbor

Island Rec's Music on the Lawn free concert series wraps up with The Tropics in concert at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 9 at the San Juan Island Historical Museum lawn.  The TROPICS feature the Vocals of Elaine Skeffington, the Saxophone, Flute, Guitar and Keyboard of Shoreline Music Teacher Greg Boehme and the Guitar Virtuosity of Chad Quist. The TROPICS perform Classic Rock, R&B, Soul, Swing, Newer Pop Hits, Country, Yacht Rock (it’s a thing!) and Smooth Jazz.

August 2: Music on the Lawn - "Barcode" in Friday Harbor

Barcode performs at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 2 at the San Juan Island Historical Museum lawn as the penultimate concert in this year's Island Rec's Music on the Lawn free concert series. Formed in early 2021, debuting at the Lakedale Music Festival, BARCODE was created to please those in need of the live sounds of the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s rock!

July 26: Music on the Lawn - "Tommy Dale and The Dangerfields" in Friday Harbor

Tommy Dale and The Dangerfields performs at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26 at the San Juan Island Historical Museum lawn. The concert is free. Local favorites Tommy Dale and The Dangerfields are a dynamic group of veteran performers that know the formula to make every event come alive.  A mix of blues, rock and funk, original tunes and classic covers, this band brings the energy. Y’all can’t help but to Get on Up and feed off the groove these cats put down.
