Friday Harbor junior James Guard finished the season amongst the state’s top eight 113-pounders at the Class 1B/2B State Wrestling Tournament Friday-Saturday, Feb. 19-20 in the Tacoma Dome. Fellow Wolverine juniors Jesse Payne (120 pounds) and Hunter Rustad (170) gained valuable experience against the 16 best wrestlers in their classes.
Guard opened his Mat Classic performance by pinning Northwest Christian’s Tommy Luce in 41 seconds. Eventual fifth-place finisher Bryce Martinez of Warden defeated Guard by fall at 4:22 into a quarter-final match. Guard stopped Selkirk’s Tommy Lininger at 1:31 in the consolation bracket’s second round. Guard tied for eighth place after Raymond’s Jack Jordan beat him 5-1 in the consolation quarterfinal.
Payne dropped his first-round match by fall at 2:47 to fourth-place finisher Rodrigo Ozuna of Warden. In the consolation competition, Kaleb Orton of Ocosta eliminated Payne by a 15-5 decision.
In his first-round match, Rustad lost 19-3 to eventual runner-up Ethan Landt of Reardan. Glen Johnson of Liberty knocked Rustad out of the tourney with a pin at 4:42 in a consolation match.
Warden won the Class 1B/2B team title with 176 points. Tonasket placed second with 134.5, Reardan finished third with 117.5 and Concrete was fourth with 78.5.
