Friday Harbor girls basketball team will be making their third straight state tournament appearance when they face Mabton at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at A.C. Davis High School in Yakima. The Vikings have earned a sweet-16 berth four consecutive seasons. The winner of the regional contest will compete among Class 2B’s top 12 teams at the Hardwood Classic Finals in Spokane next week.

Friday Harbor, 11-12 overall, clinched District 1/2’s second seed with a 38-17 victory over Auburn Adventist Feb. 18. The Wolverines finished fourth in the Northwest 2B/1B League with a 6-6 record.

By beating Tonasket 56-47 on Feb. 18 Mabton earned District 5/6’s fifth seed to the state tourney. The Vikings are 16-6 overall and finished second in the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference with a 12-2 record.

The Wolverines appeared in eight previous state tourneys. If they head to the Lilac City, it would be their first game on a Spokane arena’s big floor since 1987. They placed fourth in Class B in 1980 and eighth in 1984.

Mabton is competing in the state tournament a sixth time. The Vikings edged Wahkiakum for third place last year.
