Timberwolves rally, eliminate Wolverines from state tourney

Friday Harbor built a 13-point first-half lead but Morton/White Pass rallied in the second half for a 48-40 victory at the 2018 State Tournament In Spokane Wednesday, Feb. 28. The Wolverines (15-9) finished their season among Class 2B’s top 12 teams. The Timberwolves (21-6) advance to a quarterfinal against Liberty (21-3) on Thursday, March 1, 2018.

MWP went up 10-6 at the start of the game but Friday Harbor went on a 11-2 run for a 27-14 lead with two minutes to go in the second quarter. The Timberwolves trimmed Wolverines’ lead to 31-23 at the half.

The Timberwolves, who won state hoop titles in 2015 and 2016, continued that momentum in the second half: They outscored the Wolverines 13-5 in the third quarter and 12-4 in the fourth.

In shooting, MWP sank 21 of 42 field-goal attempts for 50 percent. The Wolverines shot 12 for 26 in the first half but went cold in the second half, sinking 4 of 17. They made 37 percent of their shots for the game.

Friday Harbor out-rebounded MWP 13-11 in the first half but the Timberwolves grabbed 19 boards to the Wolverines’ 8 in the second half.

The Wolverine defense limited the Timberwolves’ leading scorer — Matthew Poquette — to 13 points in the first two quarters but he added 15 more in the final two periods for a game-leading 28. Marshall Clark led the Wolverines with 14 and Kyle Mapstead contributed 11.
