Viking golfer Hildreth, Wolverine Graham headed to state; Friday Harbor sending 3 to bi-districts

Wolverine Coach Jack Rice sent in this report on an extraordinary District Tournament at the Gallery Golf Club, Oak Harbor May 12, 2022.

I’m reminded of the movie ‘Caddy Shack’, where Bill Murry is caddying for the Mon Senior and the wind is blowing so hard the flag stick is bent over, almost touching the green. Murry says “No problem your Eminence, it’s going to be a slight gale today”.

The weather at the District Tournament at the Gallery Golf Club on Whidbey Island US Naval Air Base was about the worst cold and wind I have ever seen players compete in. The temperature was in the low 50s and the winds were gusting between 20 to 40 mph. To top it off, it started raining as the players made the turn to play the back 9 holes.

Friday Harbor baseball team to open state tourney against Kalama in Brewster

Friday Harbor, after securing a berth in the 2022 Class 2B State Baseball Tournament via a walk-off win, will open regional action against Kalama in Brewster at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21.

Wolverine seniors — AJ Rude, Dylan Roberson, Levi Buchanan, Camden Losey and Connor Haines — will be making their first state appearance since their freshman year. Pandemic concerns cancelled postseason play in 2020 and 2021. “It was a really big goal for all the seniors,” Haines said of playing against Class 2B’s top 16 squads. Advancing to state “was a pretty big accomplishment,” the catcher added.

Friday Harbor High School golf team outplays Grace Academy

Friday Harbor High School Golf Team played Grace Academy at Cedarcrest Golf Club, Marysville April 19, 2022. Wolverine Coach Jack Rice sent in this report.

After being gone on Spring Break for a week I thought we might come back a little rusty but to my surprise we made a great showing. Jack Mason came out strong and was one under par through 6 holes. Cedarcrest is a short but tight course next to the Grace Academy. When I caught up with him on the 7-hole, Coach Waite told me he was playing beautifully; he had hardly missed a shot. I watched him 3 putt on holes 7, 8 & 9, the last three greens to end up with a score of 38. I could see immediately what he was doing wrong so for you golfers, here is the tip of the week. He had lifted his hands too high and dropped his eyes about 2 inches inside the putter line. If you don’t have your eyes over the ball when putting, it is hard to get the putter lined up properly. After five minutes on the putting green, and making a few corrections, he was back to normal, draining everything! The two 8th graders are locking their spots on the team with solid play, Jack Hess 47 and Finn Graham 55.

Friday Harbor golf team plays impromptu scramble

The tragic fire in down town Friday Harbor had far reaching consequences. As the Orcas golfers were about to depart the ferry as it docked in Friday Harbor, the Captain announced that all afternoon ferries had been cancelled and if the team got off the ferry, they would have to spend the night on San Juan Island. As you might guess, the match was cancelled.

1st match of the season Friday Harbor vs Lopez played at San Juan Golf Club

Friday Harbor High School Golf Coach Jack Rice sent in this report about the first match of the season March 24, 2022.

I’m not a big poker player but I like the hand I’m holding; it’s a pair of Jacks: senior Jack Mason and 8th grader Jack Hess. As a Senior on the golf team, Jack Mason will lead the Wolverine Golf Team this year as displayed by his fine play of 37 in our first match. Jack Hess, as an 8th grader, has come out of the box strong. He knows how to control the ball and is developing a strong short game. A big Thank You to Connie Gregor, local Professional, for getting him off to such an early start.

Because Friday Harbor is in the 1A/2B League, students from the 8th grade are eligible to participate in certain sports. We also have another 8 grader, Finn Graham. Our two 8th graders finished tied for 2nd and 5th place on our team. We have 11 sophomore guys out for the team this year. They are led by Alden Carli and Ryan Rautenberg. The competition between the sophmores is great and they are learning from each other. We will have strong competition to see who makes the 6-man team representing Friday Harbor at the District Tournament.

On the Ladies Team, we have a record turnout with 8 players. They are led by two returning seniors, Yumi Thomas and Izzy Graham. Two new players, freshman Morgan Douglas and senior Anna Albert, will complete the core unit for the ladies.

A special thank you to the San Juan Golf Club members and staff for hosting our home matches. The greens crew went all out for this event. Considering all the rain we have had over the last few weeks the course looked great. I watched one of the Lopez kids take his first putt and the greens were so fast he knocked the ball completely off the green. We appreciate our maintenance crew for how they keep our little course looking and playing, it’s something special.
